Human Appeal opens new shop on Whitechapel Road

International humanitarian aid and development charity Human Appeal is one of the UK’s fastest growing charities. It has a presence in 25 countries, spanning Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, where it helps in times of crisis and delivers sustainable development programmes at other times.

However, on Thursday the focus was much closer to home as Human Appeal opened a shop on the south side of Whitechapel Road, just to the west of the junction with Vallance Road.

The shop stocks products made by Human Appeal’s beneficiaries, such as artisans and farmers, and sourced through its own field offices and partners overseas, Many of the products are hand-made and ethical. Products currently for sale include:
Medjool dates, olives, olive oil, spices and marinades (produced in Palestine)
Honey (from Spain)
Soaps (UK)
Greeting cards (UK)
Gifts and hampers.

Human Appeal is also looking for volunteers to help run the shop: just pop in, any time, and have a chat about how you can help.

The cutting of the ribbon was performed by John Biggs, who – just to avoid confusion  – stated that he believed he was present as the mayor of Tower Hamlets and not in his capacity as the City & East Greater London Assembly Member. This was probably the first time he had opened a shop in Tower Hamlets since the mayoral election – and he seemed totally delighted with his skills (pictured).
