Police appeal for witnesses to fatal collision in Romford

POLICE ARE asking members of the public who witnessed a collision between a car and two pedestrians in Harold Hill to come forward. The collision occurred on Petersfield Avenue, at the junction with St Neots Road at just part midnight on Saturday, 11th July.

The two pedestrians were both male and 58 years old. The London Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance attended the scene of the collision and paramedics gave both victims medical treatment. Despite their best efforts, one of the men died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.  The second victim was taken to hospital for further treatment.  His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the car involved in the collision did not stop at the scene. Police found it shortly afterwards and the driver, 36, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.  The driver was taken to an East London police station and has since been released. He remains under investigation.

Now police had said that they would like to speak with any members of the public who may have information which could assist them.  They would like to speak with anyone who saw the collision, but they have also asked that anyone who was in the area at that time check their dashcam footage in case there is anything which might assist the investigation.

•Story Update The man who died in the collision was later named as Mark Joseph Henry, from Romford. A spokesperson for Mr Henry’s family said, “Mark will be greatly missed and was much loved by his sister, two brothers and his extended family and was taken too soon in this road traffic collision.”
