Nelson Street arson suspects to plead not guilty

TWO MEN charged in connection with the alleged arson attack on the former synagogue in Nelson Street, Whitechapel, have appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing of the case against them.

The defendants have been named as Dominic Charles-Turner, 31, and Moses Edwards, 45. Both are from East London. Both have been charged with arson with intent to endanger life at the former synagogue. The building had been disused since 2020, but still displayed Jewish symbols. It was in the process of being sold to a local Muslim community group, which plans to turn the building into a mosque and community centre.

The Court heard further details of the arson attack. This began at 5am on 5th May 2026 with two small explosions at the entrance to the building, which were followed by a small fire. The Fire Brigade attended the scene, arriving shortly after the explosions. They found six wine bottles which were later found to contain petrol. Two had been badly damaged by fire.

A timetable for the legal proceedings was set. There will be a plea hearing on 18th September 2026. Barristers representing the Defendants indicated that the two suspects would plead “not guilty”. A provisional trial date was set for 28th April 2027.
