GREAT EXAM results were welcomed by Mayor Lutfur Rahman last week, as GCSE achievements came out just after SATs results for Key Stage 2 school pupils.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman congratulated all those young people who sat GCSES, saying, “I know that students in all of the borough’s schools have been working hard towards this moment, with help and support from their families and the incredible teachers and support staff we have here in Tower Hamlets. So many opportunities are open to you as you continue your post-GCSE journeys. Whatever you decide to do, good luck and be assured that there’s support to help you along the way.”
The SATs results saw 81% of Tower Hamlets Key Stage 1 pupils meet the expected standard in phonics: this is up from last year and close to the national average. Key Stage 2 pupils scored higher than the national average in all subjects. The Council reports that overall, 71.6% of pupils who took SATs reached the expected standard in Reading, Writing and Mathematics, which is above the national average of 63%.
The Council reports that 74.8% of Tower Hamlets students achieved grades 9-4 in Maths and 81% achieved grades 9-4 in English. It hasn’t reported what the national averages are, and it is hard to find out, as some outlets only measure grades 5-9 and others have huge tables of results which make it hard to find these precise figures. However, one source (FFT Education Datalab) reports that the proportion of students achieving grade 4 or above in all subjects is 70.7%.

What of the future? The Council says that Tower Hamlets Young WorkPath “provides careers information, advice and guidance about the next steps available to young people, no matter what their results are… and offers careers interviews in person, over the phone or via video.”
