HUNDREDS OF runners from near and far took part in the annual Muslim Charity Run (MCR) at Victoria Park which was held to raise money for charitable causes.
The 5km endurance test organised by the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre has been the ultimate factor uniting good causes with fitness, proving to be -a hugely popular showpiece event over the last few years.
Team Shahjalal from Stepney were the biggest team on show, with 98 runners – raising almost £50,000 for their charitable cause.
Tower Hamlets Councillor Faruque Mahfuz Ahmed was part of the #teamsj runners and spoke after completing his run. “It’s been a tremendous turnout today with so many happy faces raising awareness and funds for such fantastic causes,” he said. “Thank you to the organisers on such a well marshalled event and well done to everybody, young and old.”
The main aim of the MCR is to promote healthier lifestyles and help charities raise funds for good causes.
Notable community personalities representing #teamsj included Forid Ahmed, Bokul Hussain, Sorwar Alam, Akik Miah, Jumz Ahmed, Sunur Uddin, Jamir Chowdhury, Abdul Salik, Afazul Hoque, Khairul Alam, Jamanul Hoque, Pervez Chowdhury, Abdal Ahmed and Shofiqul Islam.
Shah Jalal Mosque and Community Centre Chair Muhammad Ali added, “We are really proud of our team and their phenomenal achievements. This is a massive boost for our project and what we are trying to achieve for our community. There will be lots of projects to get involved with in the next twelve months to keep this momentum going, and we urge everybody to get in touch and join our team of volunteers.”
Dilowar Khan, Director of Finance and Engagement for the East London Mosque, concluded: “It has been a huge blessing to see what was once a small idea known as Run 4 Your Mosque become such a huge annual event that brings together people young and old to raise money for causes that matter to them. We hope to continue to organise this run for the foreseeable future. Well done to all those who participated.”
