A FIRE in a flat on the 17th floor of a 22-storey residential tower block has left a man dead. The alarm was raised in the early morning, with calls reaching the London Fire Brigade Control Centre at 4.35am.
Ten fire engines – from Poplar, Whitechapel, Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Greenwich, Greenwich and Bethnal Green – ferried around 70 firefighters to the scene. Nearby roads were closed and buses were diverted as firefighters tackled the blaze.
Around 50 people had already left the building by the time they arrived. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were able to rescue two adults and one child. The fire damaged the two-room flat and balcony and was brought under control by 6.41am.
The London Fire Brigade’s Fire Investigation Team is trying to establish the cause of the fire. Thanks to the London Fire Brigade team for keeping East Londoners safe.
