DEPUTY MAYOR Cllr Maium Talukdar took time out of his busy schedule last Saturday to visit a health fair in Launch Street on the Isle of Dogs last Thursday, 10th September. And he joined in what was going on – by taking one of the free men’s health checks on offer.
The event was organised by Healthy Tower Hamlets – the Council’s guiding strategy for improving health in Tower Hamlets. The Council has been looking at statistics about the health of residents which show that locals suffer from high rates of heart disease, strokes and diabetes. There are a number of factors which contribute to these conditions developing – such as high blood pressure, being overweight and smoking. Healthy Tower Hamlets had information on all of these issues – and more.
The Council’s Healthy Tower Hamlets programme is trying to help residents if they have these factors – the “naughty numbers”. It will then support residents to deal with these issues – in the hope of cutting the numbers of people who go on to suffer from the serious conditions.

“It’s up to all of us to take charge of our health,” said Cllr Talukdar. “Healthy Tower Hamlets has come down to the Island with their equipment and helped the community take the first step towards improving our health – and we are very grateful to the Council for taking this proactive approach.”
Cllr Talukdar admitted that men are often slow to come forward to have their health checked. “It’s no good hiding at home and hoping things will improve,” he said. “We all have to come forward and have these painless health checks, so that we can pick up any warning signs in time to do something about them.”
The Deputy Mayor led the way by taking one of the health checks to show how easy it is to take control of your health – once you have taken the first step.
●Anyone who missed the Health Fair can use the self-service kiosk in the Idea Stores in Chrisp Street, Bow or Watney Market or in Mile End Leisure Centre to find out whether you have “naughty numbers”.
