IT’S SEXUAL HEALTH Awareness Week. Tower Hamlets Council is marking the week by holding an event outside the Town Hall from 10.30am to 4pm on Thursday, 17th September.
There will be a testing van outside the Town Hall and you can take a test for HIV or any Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). There will be free condoms to take away. You can also receive advice on and support for HIV and PrEP.
The theme of this year’s Sexual Health Awareness Week is “Let’s Connect” – what it means to be connected to our own bodies, emotions and needs.
The Government funds Councils to run Public Health Services in their area, and Public Health is required to run sexual health services such as testing. The Council adds to the government money and runs a wide range of support services helping people – especially, but not only, young people – with the mechanics and emotions connected to sexual relationships. It is difficult to find out what these are.
The Council has a Health & Wellbeing page on its website which says the following: “Sexual health services in Tower Hamlets are provided through open access ‘one stop shops’ that promote good sexual health and well-being.” That’s all. It doesn’t even say where the one-stop shops are. The sexual health service costs a great deal of money: Tower Hamlets residents deserve easier access to information about the service – all year round.
