YORK HALL Leisure Centre has been closed – with Tower Hamlets Council insisting that this is a temporary closure. The Be Well The Spa, situated in York Hall, is also closed.
Tower Hamlets Council says: “York Hall Leisure Centre, including Be Well The Spa, is temporarily closed until further notice due to an operational water issue affecting the site. The decision to close the centre has been taken to ensure the continued health, safety and wellbeing of our customers, staff and visitors while necessary investigations and remedial works are carried out.
We are working closely with relevant specialists to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and will reopen the facility once it is safe to do so. We apologise to our customers and encourage them to use other Be Well leisure centres during this period. We will continue to provide updates and notify customers as soon as the centre is ready to reopen.”
The closure of the Leisure Centre does not affect the screening of the Men’s World Cup Football final on Sunday, 19th July, as this is in the Hall, not the Leisure Centre. Doors open at 7pm.
It is a shame that the Council has not been fully transparent and given a proper reason for the closure of York Hall. Referring to “an operational water issue” is bound to lead to speculation: is there a broken pipe? has the whole system broken down? did someone forget to do the Legionnaire’s test? We’ll have to keep an eye on that one.
The Council press release encouraged residents to use other Be Well Centres. Fortunately, Mayor Lutfur Rahman brought Poplar Baths back as a swimming pool – after it was closed by the Lib-Dems and Labour failed to re-open it – so we have more pools than might have been the case.
The Council press release did not give a link for residents to find a list of other Be Wells, but we have found the Be Well site and give the link below. Doing so, we have noticed that there is a special offer on at the moment. If you join by 30th August, you will get three months’ membership for the price of two. It’s the weather for swimming, so a membership could allow you to go for a swim before – or after – work. Swimming would also be a good way to entertain the family during the summer holidays: with the Thames, the docks and the canals, all children in Tower Hamlets should know how to swim. Join up now!
