Thought for today 11.06.20

#BlackLivesMatter This month we shall be recording responses made to the killing of George Floyd on 25th May. Too many black people have died at the hands of state racism, institutional racism – and individual racism stoked by the first two.  We can all work together to turn the tide of racism. It will be a long and difficult struggle – but George Floyd’s death has brought many young people into that fight. We may yet change the world. Should we name 25th May as George Floyd day, to ensure that we never forget?

Here, Rihanna makes us remember how long the injustice has been going on and why the Black Lives Matter movement is justifiably impatient for change.

“For the last few days, the magnitude of devastation, anger, sadness I’ve felt has been overwhelming to say the least. Watching my people get murdered and lynched day after day pushed me to a heavy place in my heart! To the point of staying away from socials, just to avoid hearing the blood curdling agony in George Floyd’s voice again, begging over and over for his life… The pure joy and climax on the face of this bigot, murderer, thug, pig, bum, Derek Chauvin, haunts me!! I can’t shake this!… If intentional MURDER is the fit consequence for ‘drugs’ or ‘resisting arrest’… then what’s the fit consequence for MURDER?”
Rihanna, online comment in support of justice for George Floyd and other Black citizens, including Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, who have died and seen their killers walk free
