TODAY WE look out over a Thames at high tide to what we now know as the O2 Arena – one of East London’s most popular entertainment venues.
The building was originally constructed to hold the Millennium Exhibition, one of the series of quaint undertakings to mark the new millennium set in place by the Blair Government. In its first form, it was the location for the infamous rendition of Auld Lang Syne which saw Blair trying to hold hands with the Queen.
After criticism that so much money should be spent on a building with an expected life span of just 25 years, the O2 was rebuilt. Now Londoners can go inside the venue for entertainment – or enjoy the outside of the building by taking one of the “Up at the O2” walks over the roof.
