YES, IT’S another one. It feels like there’s been a fire in a recycling centre every couple of weeks over the summer. The latest one happened at Argall Metal’s recycling centre in Staffa Road, Leyton, in the early morning of Tuesday, 8th September.
This one came to a different kind of recycling centre, though. The Staffa Road centre is a metal recycling centre. The London Fire Brigade estimates that around 20 tonnes of scrap metal was alight at the height of the fire.
The Fire Brigade was first called at 06.44am. Crews from Leyton, Homerton Walthamstow and other surrounding fire stations brought around 60 firefighters out to fight the fire. A 32m ladder and a drone team also came to the scene. The fire was brought under control just before 10am and the last crew left the scene at 1pm.
The fire produced a large volume of smoke. Local residents were advised to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows shut, as a precaution – advice repeated, via a post on X, by local MP Stella Creasy. Staffa Road was closed while firefighters tackled the blaze. No injuries were reported.
When a recycling centre catches fire, it is usual to suspect that a lithium battery, such as those used to power e-bikes, may well have been the cause. However, on this occasion the London Fire Brigade has stated that the cause of the fire is not known yet.
