SMOKE FROM a huge fire at a warehouse on the A13, Ripple Road, in Barking could be seen across London yesterday, 12th August. A massive turnout from East London fire fighters ensured the blaze was quickly controlled.
The very hot weather dictated the tactics of the fire brigade. Fire engines from Barking, Dagenham, Ilford and nearby areas brought 125 firefighters to the two-storey warehouse. This allowed firefighters to take breaks to cool off without holding back the attack on the fire. A turntable ladder also attended the scene and was table to help tackle the flames and provide an aerial view to guide firefighters as they worked.
The building had been evacuated before the emergency services arrived. However, the firefighters had to remove some cylinders from the warehouse and then cool them down to prevent them from exploding.
The fire closed a large part of the A13 and disrupted travel in the area for several hours. Nearby residents were advised to stay indoors and close their windows. It is not yet clear how the fire started.
