A HUGE PLUME of black smoke rose up from south west London earlier this evening, clearly visible across East London. Fifteen fire engines with around 100 firefighters are at the site.

The fire is reported to be at the Deptford Recycling Centre, which is thought to be run by a number of private companies. There was a fire there on 8th June. Nearby railtrack had to be closed to trains, causing transport chaos.
Nearby witnesses report ash and particles are raining down on the area. Train passengers have been told there may be disruption to their journeys. Local residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the large volume of smoke being produced by the fire.
The most common cause of fires at recycling centres is rechargeable batteries, such as those used to power e-scooters and e-bikes, overheating. Residents and businesses are always advised to dispose of these safely and not to put them in domestic waste.
