What a good Day!

Emdad Rahman reports: A packed York Hall saw unbeaten Camden boxer Ben Day lift his very first professional belt. Day is trained by the veteran Alec Wilkey and his unstoppable body shot early in the bout left the fight strategies of his opponent from Riga in tatters.
The deadly first round body shot saw Day’s Latvian opponent Ilja Sovdra stopped in his tracks. It was enough to win the unbeaten Poplar-based lightweight the International Masters Bronze lightweight title.
An ecstatic Day said: “I had left no stone unturned in preparing for this fight. Dreams come true. With or without this title, I’m a champion. I was so proud to headline the show with Ricky Hatton’s boys on my undercard.”
The new Masters Champion thanked his supporters: “I would like to thank my sponsors Ringtone Boxing Gym and my PR Manager Tim Rickson for their support. I’m so proud of myself. After all the years of suffering and pain I’m finally there and no one can take this away from me. I’ve completely turned my life. Thank you to everyone for all the support and, as I always say, ‘follow your dreams.’”
Trainer Alec Wilkey added: “What can I say? I’m so proud of Ben Day. He’s worked really hard for this fight and it’s paid off in 75 seconds. We had been working on the body shots in the gym and what a shot he hit him with. Nice rest now before we are back on it.”
The famed Upton clan and their coach Ricky Hatton were also in attendance at York Hall. All three brothers, Sonny, Paul and Anthony won their bouts as the Hitman’s protégés swept the board.
