Time to check you are on the electoral register

ACT NOW! It’s the week to make sure your name is on the electoral register. You should have received a letter from the Council this week explaining what you need to do.

Local Councils are supporting the Voter Registration Week – a campaign run by the Greater London Authority (GLA) to encourage residents to check they are on the register or to join it if they are not. Go to the page on their website for more information about registering and checking you have acceptable ID.

Reasons to register NOW
•You do need to be on the electoral register to vote in local, regional and national elections. Although you can join the register later than this week – if you move house, for example – there are deadlines before each election. By confirming your details now, you are registered for the coming year.

•Even though there are no scheduled elections due in East London over the next twelve months, you never know when there is going to be a by-election. Register now to be on the safe side.

•The Government often uses the number of people on the electoral register to assess the number of people living in the borough when it comes to funding decisions. Getting everyone registered means your Council will get its fair share of government money. Not getting round to registering means the Council misses out.

•Being on the electoral register can act as an extra form of identification for you.

You do need to show identification at the polling station when you go to vote.  You can find out more about this on the GLA’s website.

If you move, you’ll probably be concentrating on registering with utilities and internet providers. Don’t forget to change your address on the electoral register too.
