Police appeal for help as man shot dead in Newham

A MAN in his 40s, with gunshot wounds, was found in a car in St Bartholomew’s Road, Newham at around 3am on Tuesday, 18th August. He was found by police, who had been called out by members of the public reporting that they had heard gunshots.

The London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance also attended. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed.

Detectives have launched an investigation. They set up a crime scene in St Bartholomew’s Road, and in the first instance they are trying to establish how the shooting happened.

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten, who is leading the investigation, explained police priorities. “Firstly, our thoughts remain with the friends and family of the man who has sadly died,” he said. “We know this incident will cause concern in the local area, and I want to reassure the community that my team and I are doing everything we can to determine what happened and trace those responsible. Those in the area will continue to see an increased police presence throughout the day while these enquiries continue.”

The DCI then appealed to the public for assistance, saying, “We are asking anyone with information, or who may have witnessed anything in the early hours of the morning, to please contact us. Any piece of information, no matter how small, could be vital to our investigation.”
