ICC World Cup is special guest at London Sportif event

WHAT A RARE EVENT! It’s not often that a real life World Cup comes to East London – but on Sunday, 16th January the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup came to Tower Hamlets.

The Cup, which is currently held by England, made its appearance at the London Sportif annual awards ceremony, which took place at the London Enterprise Academy (LEA).  London Sportif was celebrating its fifth anniversary – and expressing thanks and appreciation to the many sponsors and supporters who have been there on this memorable journey. Also being celebrated was the support received from supports around the country, who appreciate the good which London Sportif is doing by encouraging active participation in sport and have praised its work.

This should, of course, have been the fifth awards ceremony, but last year’s event had to be cancelled, in line with Covid restrictions.  (No one thought to call it a “work meeting” back then!) This was, therefore, a bumper ceremony – with over 100 awards handed out to players for their achievements over the last two years.

These achievements were many and great – but there is no doubt that the star of the show was the attendance of the magnificent World Cup, which was brought into the venue in secret before being unveiled to the special guests and the audience. The Cup stood on its podium, gleaming brightly as it was applauded and then inspected by guests who reflected on the cricketing greats who had held it.

Guests present included: Ashid Ali, Principal of LEA; Apsana Begum MP; Dr Zakir Khan; Cllr Ahbab Hussain, Speaker of the Council; Shahidul Alam Ratan, CEO of Capital Kids Cricket; Abul Hyat Nurujjaman of Taj Accountants; Cllr Sabina Aktar; Cllr Motin Uzzaman; Cllr Ayesha Chowdhury; Jubair Ahmed, Secretary, London Bangla Press Club, and media personality Shah Yusuf.
