CHESHIRE POLICE have confirmed that they were called out in the early hours of Saturday morning, 26th October, to investigate reports of an assault in the market town of Frodsham, near Manchester – birthplace of Gary Barlow.
A short video has been circulating on X (formerly Twitter) which shows a comotion featuring Mike Amesbury. He seems to be shouting and swearing at a man who is lying on the pavement. The Labour MP for Runcorn and Helsby can be head saying, “you won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?”
Other people in the video appear to be trying to calm Amesbury down: it is not known if they are friends of Amesbury or were simply passers-by. The police confirmed that, “A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing.”
Amesbury referred to the incident on his Facebook page on Saturday morning. “Last night I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened following an evening out with friend,” he posted. “This morning I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what had happened. I will not be making any further public comment but will of course co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.”
Mike Amesbury has been a Labour MP in Cheshire since 2017. He was a shadow minister for local government before Labour won the last General Election. The BBC has reported that last year a man was convicted of stalking and harassing Amesbury at his constituency office and in Frodsham town centre, and that Amesbury had confessed the experience had left him feeling “that little bit more anxious”.
The Labour Party has issued a neutral response, saying, “We are aware of an incident that took place last night. We understand that Mke Amesbury MP approached Cheshire Police to report what happened ths morning himself and that he will co-operate with any enquiries they have.” The Party has not revealed whether Keir Starmer has been informed.
