Guilty of the murder in Lansbury Estate Park

IT TOOK TWO trials at the Old Bailey, but Yasin Omar Amare, 29, of Pawleyne Close, Penge, has now been found guilty of murdering Gleb Stanislavovitch Zhebrovsky (known as Gleb Stalnoy).

The first trial took place at the Old Bailey in 2019, ending just before Christmas with the jury failing to reach a verdict. The retrial ended with a guilty verdict on Monday this week. Amare will return to the Old Bailey for sentencing on a date to be set.

The murder took place over a year ago – 15th June 2019. Murder victim Gleb was relaxing with a friend after going to the barber’s. Gleb received a text from Amara. The two had known each other but had fallen out. Gleb told his friend that he had to see Amara to resolve the tension between them.

Gleb and the friend went to a flat in Ellesmere Street, E14, where Amare was staying. They spoke to Amare and another man through the window. Amare told Gleb to go to Lansbury Estate park, which was nearby, and Amare would meet him there. Gleb and his friend went to the park and witnesses saw them sat on the grass, chatting casually together.

At around 2pm, Amare and the other man came along – and Amare produced a knife, quickly stabbing Gleb three times. Amare ran back to the flat but then made his way to Croydon, via the DLR and a train. The emergency services were called to the park, but despite their best efforts paramedics were unable to save Gleb and he was pronounced dead at 2.37pm.

Police immediately launched a murder investigation. They identified Amare as their prime suspect and were able to find him at a hotel in Thornton Heath. Amare denied all knowledge of the stabbing and then refused to answer further questions. Detectives obtained statements from eye witnesses and evidence from CCTV and mobile phone records, which was sufficient to convince the second jury of Amare’s guilt.

Detective Inspector Tom Williams of Specialist Crime led the investigation and said,

“This was a brutal and clinical attack, carried out in broad daylight in a public place, that left Gleb with little chance of survival. The fact that witnesses report he was relaxed and chatting with his friend in the moments prior to the attack, only illustrates its explosive ferocity.

“The motive behind Amare’s decision to attack Gleb has not been conclusively established. However, what is undeniably clear is that Amare armed himself with the intention of attacking Gleb and causing him serious injury. I am pleased that Amare has been brought to justice and will now face a significant amount of time behind bars.”
