Christmas cookies allergens are not in English

A POPULAR duo of Christmas treats have been withdrawn from sale for an unusual reason: the allergens they contain are not listed on the label in English. They have been on sale in Home Bargain stores.

The presence of an allergen – such as common ingredients like milk and flour – does not mean that the product is unhealthy or can make you ill. But to someone who suffers from an allergy to that ingredient, know whether it is present in the product can be a matter of life or death. That’s why the law requires products sold in the UK to list all ingredients in English.

The two items which do not do this are Lambertz Mini Spekulatius and Lambertz Christmas Tree Cookies – both items which will appeal to the Christmas market. The Spekulatius comes in a pack size of 150g, with a best before date of 30th August 2027. The cookies are in a pack size of 160g, with a best before date of 17th May 2027.

The list of allergens the products contains is long: barley and wheat (gluten), egg, hazelnut (nuts), lactose and whey (milk), lecithin (soya), lupin, nuts, peanuts and sesame. If you have an allergy to any of these ingredients, or to the food groups listed here in brackets, you are advised not to eat the item. If you do keep the product because you do not have an allergy, store it safely – where children and visitors will not be able to access it.

You should take it back to a Home Bargains store, where you should receive a full refund.
