WIGAN FOOTBALLER NATHAN BYRNE was the target of racist abuse after his team drew 2-2 with Bristol City on Saturday. The Club immediately condemned a racist message sent to the player’s Twitter account.
Shortly afterwards, a 20 year old man from Sheffield went into a police station in Blackpool and admitted sending the tweet.
Police arrested the self-identified tweeter on suspicion of sending malicious communications and committing a racially aggravated public order offence. He was questioned and later released pending further inquiries. The police have sent a file to the Crown Prosecution Service.
The Football League has supported Byrne, and other players who are the targets of racist abuse, by issuing a statement indicating they were “saddened, disappointed and angered” to hear reports of further cases of alleged racism.
