Three arrests in Nelson Street arson probe

THREE PEOPLE have now been arrested by Counter Terrorism police investigating the small fire in Nelson Street, Whitechapel, E1 on 5th May.

The fire was lit outside a building which used to be a synagogue and is in the process of being sold to a Somali Muslim organisation. Police have established that the fire was started intentionally just after 5am.

Moses Edwards, 45, of Wanstead, was arrested on 10th May. He was later charged with arson with intent to endanger life and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 12th May. He was remanded in custody and was ordered to appear at the Old Bailey on 5th June.

A 52 year old woman, who has not been named, was arrested on the same day. She has now been released on bail and must report back to the police in August.

The third arrest came on 12th May, when a 31 year old man was arrested at an address in Leyton. He remains in custody.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of the Counter Terrorism police team, reminded everyone that the level of threat from terrorism is now “severe”. She said that everyone can play their part in keeping the community safe and urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour.

Police had yet to announce what motive they believe is behind the arson attack.
