Now GB women finish fourth in basketball

IS FOURTH place the new standard for British women’s teams competing internationally? Following on from the women’s football team, it’s the result achieved by the Great Britain’s women’s basketball team too.

The team has been playing in the EuroBasket championships in Belgrade. They met Hungary in the quarter-finals – hanging on to a one point lead during the closing minutes of the game.

Their winning streak was stopped, in the semi-finals, by France – on the narrow margin of 63-56. Sadly the British team lost the play-off to Serbia by a wider margin – 81-55 – and Serbia ended up with the bronze medal.

Disappointing though the fourth place will be, it is the highest place that British women have ever won in the competition.

Rachael Vanderwal, who played in the Commonwealth Games silver medal team, spoke to GB Basketball about the EuroBasket achievement. “It’s been a long tournament,” she said, “both emotionally and physically – but the big picture shows how far we have come: from not even qualifying in 2017, to fighting for a medal.”
