Deputy Mayor is proud of new Women’s Centre

Cllr Maium Talukdar praised the Nari Centre – a new women’s centre for women in Tower Hamlets – after they held the Centre’s first Summer Fest.

Tower Hamlets Council has given its Cabinet members very long job titles, and Cllr Talukdar is the Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and the Cost of Living, Improving Customer Services and Voluntary Sector Engagement. He explained the vision behind the Nari Centre, saying:
“The vision for the Nari Centre was to create a place where women could access support, opportunities and services in one welcoming location. Whether someone needs advice on housing and benefits, specialist support, or simply a place to meet others and learn something new, the Nari Centre is here for them. Since opening in February, it has already supported many women, and we are proud to see it going from strength to strength.”

The Council describes the Nari Centre as a safe, welcoming space where women can learn new skills, build confidence, make connections and access support services. Their press release does not reveal when the Fest took place, but it is believed to have been on 31st July. The Fest celebrated community, culture and connection. There was entertainment, food and a raffle. Local female entrepreneurs showcased a range of products.

The Jagonari Centre had previously been Whitechapel’s women’s centre. It concentrated mainly on Asian women and was open for nearly 30 years, during which time it built up a solid reputation in the community. It closed in September 2015, just after Labour’s John Biggs became Mayor of Tower Hamlets. The Nari Centre is trying to fill the gap – and deliver even more. If this is to become a boroughwide women’s resource, the Council will have to do a great deal of work to promote it.
