THE JUNE issue of The Voice – monthly magazine of the East London Garden Society (ELGS) – is out now, bringing greenies its usual mix of information about gardening theory and practice.
The state of our planet is a hot topic at the moment, as the Lockdown gives us the unusual experience of clean air in cities and a flourishing wildlife in rural and urban areas. Grassroots organs (pun intended) such as The Voice are a vital resource in that debate and rely on the generosity of their readers to keep assembling the information.
We all love our trees in East London – and try hard to stop the authorities cutting them down. Who would have thought that national treasurer Dame Judi Dench is also a tree fanatic? She’s even made a documentary about her passion.
The Coronavirus Lockdown has left many people a bit short of the readies: can we go out foraging and get some food off the land? The Voice looks at the law on foraging – and the good practice of self-sourcing your food. It goes on to look at biodynamic farming, which is… something you can read about in the newsletter! You’ll never see nitrogen in the same way again.
The final shot in the arm – or, if you’re brave enough, the tummy – is a focus on nettles. It’s reasonably well known that the nettle is a good source of iron, but it turns out there’s so much more to know.
