Scintilla lose ground in race for Championship

Scintilla Cricket Club lost further ground in the race for the Essex County Cricket League Premier Division as the current champions lost their senior team league game to Newham at Flanders Fields last weekend.

Ashraful Islam top scored with 74 before being bowled out by Arjun Rana. The only other Scintilla member to reach double figures was Ali Baig (12), as the team from Barking reached 128 all out. It was a disappointing score considering the second team had totalled over 300 runs on the same ground a week earlier.

Amir Shaukat was the tormentor in chief with 5/30, while Arjun Rana and Mudasser Aziz assisted in bowling out the visitors with in 26 overs.

After tea Newham lost two early wickets but consolidated through Amit Midha (25), Adnan Ashraf (25), and Wasim Majeed (31 not out) to see home a Newham win by 6 wickets.

The second team did not play during the weekend.

Scintilla did compete in a T20 charity tournament on Sunday to help support a Sri Lankan Orphanage. The Road to Jannah Orphans Cup in association with Middlesex Cricket Board featured 16 teams from all over London.

Captain Ayaz Karim said: “We need to continue to play for pride and retain our sharpness until the end of the season. I was happy with the commitment shown by the squad to bounce back from a disappointing loss and to compete at a charity tournament. Our collective spirit helped us achieve third place in a very competitive tournament.”
