THE TOXIN cereulide has been found in SMA Infant Formula and Follow-on Forumula – and Nestlé is recalling the product.
Cereulide is unlikely to be destroyed by heat – such as the boiling water used to make up formula. If cereulide is ingested, symptoms appear rapidly. The main symptoms include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
Nestlé have made it clear that babies must not be given these products – even if they have not shown any symptoms to date. If the formula you are using was prescribed by a pharmacist or other medical professional, you should consult them as a matter of urgency for advice on how to change the formula.
The company will be putting up notices in all retail outlets where these products are sold. The alert covers a large number of products with various batch codes and sell-by dates. Nestlé is asking customers who have bought formula to go to www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch and share a photo of the product they have, together with the batch code (codes can be found on the top or bottom of the product). Alternatively, you can telephone the Nestlé careline on 0800-0 81 81 80.
Nestlé is issuing customers with a full refund for products they have bought.
If your baby does show symptoms, ring 999.
