London Marathon beckons for Barking runner

Emdad Rahman

BARKING & DAGENHAM resident Peter Phillips is set for the London Marathon – and he’s determined to make a positive impact for the Children’s Society, the charity he is running to support.

Peter works for Barking and Dagenham Citizens as a Housing Advisor and his role sees him regularly defend families and vulnerable people who are at risk of losing their homes.

The 33 year old, who boasts a Parkrun personal best of 19.27, is running his first ever marathon. Peter has been passionate about sports since he was a child and has represented Barking and Dagenham, Essex County and his University.

Speaking after completing Barking Parkrun, Peter said, “I have always enjoyed sport and represented my schools’ and university sport teams. I captained my school for football, basketball and athletics, and I represented Essex at indoor level when I was younger. I have won countless medals and trophies as a youngster.

“I am especially motivated because my love of running will benefit a worthy cause: The Children’s Society. My aim is to raise £2,000 for this great organisation which works with young people to fight child poverty, neglect and help all children so that they have a better chance in life.”

Another important passion has been to help vulnerable and disadvantaged people and that’s why Peter decided to study law and use his skills to make a difference in the local community by going on to work at Citizens Advice and other charities, including Hope for Barking and Dagenham.

Peter has used running to combine his passions and he has represented charities such as Cancer Research at the Richmond half marathon; the NSPCC at the Royal Park Half Marathon; the London Legal Trust at The Big Half and British 10K – and now The Children’s Society at the London marathon.
