WHAT IS A good education? Many people might answer this question by saying going to school is about academic excellence – getting good marks in your exams and leaving school with good academic qualifications.
However, others would be quick to point out that there are many skills you should learn during your years at school – skills which will both improve your chances of finding employment and live your life to the full. Many children in East London have very limited opportunities to travel or enjoy new cultural opportunities, and it is often left to our schools to offer enrichment activities which will help our children learn about life outside the classroom.
Pupils in years seven and eight at the London Enterprise Academy have been lucky enough to benefit from just such an experience. The school organised a weekend trip to a Kingswood Activity Centre so that pupils could practise key skills, benefit from being in the fresh air and enjoy new experiences. The residential ran from Friday to Sunday and was organised by teacher Mohammad Islam and supported by nine other members of staff.
A Bushcraft Shelter session provided fun for all, while also showing pupils the value of teamwork and leadership, how to work with adults and follow instructions. New activities such as archery widened their horizons, and the giant climbing frame allowed pupils to challenge themselves to face their fears.
Pupils had plenty of opportunity to show their creativity, dedication and resilience. On a practical note, children were able to learn the crucial life skill of how to hold a good BBQ and also held a litter picking session, which reminded them of the importance of looking after our environment and helping other people.
After nearly two years of restricting their activities in order to keep safe from Covid, this excellent event made up for lost time and set the school’s youngest pupils on the path to educational success as they progress up the school. Here is their story in pictures.
