Grassroots hero and cricket coach Kanan Thiyagarajah has completed a remarkable 100+ mile cricket grounds cycle loop to raise funds for practice nets at Barking Cricket Club.
The ride began at the Essex County Cricket Ground, before heading to the Oval, then on to Lord’s, with a stop at Leyton County, before finally finishing at Barking Cricket Club. Along the journey, Kanan received encouragement from fellow cricket lovers and members of the local community who applauded his effort to give back to the game.
“This was one of the toughest but most rewarding challenges I’ve ever taken on,” said Kanan. “I love cricket and I want to make sure the next generation has the facilities they deserve. Every mile was for the youngsters at Barking Cricket Club.”
The ride was proudly supported by the Blind Cricket, and Walking Cricket groups, Barking CC members, and friends from the wider community who rallied behind Kanan’s cause. Their sponsorship will help fund new nets that will provide local players with a safe and high quality environment to train and develop their skills.
Cricket has always carried the power to unite people, build friendships, and inspire young minds. For Barking, improved facilities mean more opportunities for young players to learn discipline, teamwork, and resilience through sport.
Kanan’s cycle is a fundraising mission and a reminder of how cricket stretches far beyond the boundary rope. Acts like these strengthen clubs, uplift communities, and prove how sport can bring about lasting change.
With the new nets on the horizon, Barking Cricket Club’s future looks brighter, and Kanan’s ride will be remembered as an example of passion and determination in action.
