SWEETS sold under the name “Jolly Rancher” and manufactured by The Hershey Company may contain Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH). The Food Standards Agency (FSA) advises people not to eat them.
The FSA has also advised retailers to stop selling these products and to recall those products sold to date – and to stop importing the products.
The Hershey Company is working with the FSA to ensure that people are safe. It stopped supplying the UK market in 2024, but some UK retailers have managed to import Hershey products from third parties.
MOAH is unlikely to cause any immediate reaction, although no consumption is risk-free. However, it is a known genotoxic carcinogen: it can damage DNA, which increases the risk of cancer. It may therefore cause a risk in the longer term – especially if they are eaten in large volume and over a sustained period.
The Jolly Rancher products being recalled are all flavour of:
•Hard Candy
•“Misfits” Gummies
•Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1
•Berry Gummies
•Filled Pops
•Freeze Dried Candy
Anyone who has any of these products is advised not to eat them and to dispose of them. Anyone who has any questions is asked to contact the Environmental Health service in their local Council.
