Is it pay peace for Tube travellers?

TUBE WORKERS who are members of the Aslef trade union were due to go on strike on Thursday in their battle for better. That action has now been suspended because Transport for London (TfL) has come up with a better pay offer.

Aslef acknowledged that the new pay offer was a significant improvement, but it would not comment further on the offer until union members discuss it at a meeting on Thursday.

TfL were not shy about the offer, telling the BBC that the offer is “fair, affordable, good for our colleagues and good for London.” Members of rail union the RMT had also been planning strike action, but this was called off last week after TfL made them a new offer.

It seems that the Government has left employers realising that endless confrontation with the trade unions that represent their staff is no longer the Government’s preferred option. For the moment, travellers can look forward to undisrupted journeys – and we can only hope that the pay offer is acceptable to the rail workers too.
