Hackney asks where EV charging points should go

HACKNEY COUNCIL is getting ready to install Electric Vehicle Charging Points across the Borough – and it is asking residents to let the Council know where the Charging Points should be sited.

The Council is making good progress on its target of installing 3,000 Charging Points by 2030: 1,200 are already in place. This rate of provision – 464 chargers per 100,000 people in the borough – has earned the Council recognition from The Solar Co, which has named Hackney London’s best area for EV charging.

Hackney’s installation programme is being delivered in partnership with Zest, which is funding and instralling the new Charging Points and will be operating them.

All of the new Charging Points are run on 100% renewable energy. Drivers who hold a Hackney EV permit can charge at a reduced tariff through Hackney Light and Power, the Council’s energy service. The tariff ca be accessed by using the Zest app.

Charging Points will be installed on lamp posts or in parking bays, and all locations will be checked to ensure that they don’t block pedestrian access. Over 2,400 residents have already submitted suggested locations for the new Charging Points. Hackney Council has pledged that 10% of all Charging Points will be installed in locations where they can serve housing estates.

Cllr Sarah Young, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, explained the process, saying, “The shift to electric vehicles is creating a cleaner, quieter and more sustainable Hackney. As we support people in this transition to less polluting cars, we’re ensuring that charging infrastructure is fair, accessible and shaped by residents’ requests. That’s why we’re inviting everyone to have their say on where we install the next round of charge points. Soon, we’ll have among the densest charging networks in the country. This is your chance to help us decide exactly where these chargers are located.”
