Museum of London to celebrate 350th anniversary of Great Fire of London

Three hundred and forty-nine years ago, fire spread through the centre of London causing great destruction – but also clearing acres of land for 17th century redevelopment. Next year, the Museum of London will mark the 350th anniversary of this devastating event with a major new exhibition called “Fire! Fire!”

The Museum hopes that the exhibition will have a broad interest and attract young people to come and learn about the capital’s history. It should provide a good outing for single households or for groups of children organised through school, youth groups, etc., as it will combine multimedia features and hands-on exhibits.

The Museum will bring out some of its treasures from before and after 1666 so that visitors can gain a feel for pre-Fire London as well as understanding how London was rebuilt. The causes of the fire and the fire-fighting techniques used in an attempt to contain it, will also be explored – and personal stories of escaping the fire and rebuilding lives will be told.

The Museum of London is at 150 London Wall, EC2Y 5HN. It tells the story of London through over 80,000 objects in its possession and is open daily from 10am to 6pm and admission is free.

Tickets for Fire! Fire! are now available online, at a cost of £8 for adults and £5 for children. Family tickets are also available.
