Good year for Homeless FA

The Homeless FA exists to help homeless people play the game – a game which can improve their physical health but also their other skills, their self-respect and confidence. Homeless people can find that football changes their lives – as well as helping to challenge negative public perceptions of homelessness.

The organisation has been involved in two major international events this year. After a very successful and inspirational Training Camp at St. George’s Park, a Homeless Football FA Team England went to the Futebol de Rua national street football tournament in Braga, Portugal. They played matches against two Portugal National XI sides, before soaking up a bit of Portuguese culture with visits around Braga and S.C Braga’s Estádio Municipal de Braga stadium and a day tour of Lisbon.

The second international activity came in September with a trip to the Homeless World Cup (HWC) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Forty nine nations took part and players had the chance to pull on their three lions to head to the field but also to meet and build relationships off the field with people from across the globe.

It’s not over yet. The International Street Football Festival is being held in our very own Manchester from 15th-19th November. Games will take place at the Victoria Warehouse venue space. The final day of the Festival, 19th November, will see UK players compete in a street football tournament against national teams from Bosnia (2014 HWC runners-up), Mexico (current men and women’s HWC champions) and the HWC host country Netherlands. Everyone is invited to come and watch and find out more about Homeless Football and its FA.
