A day of frienzied football, friendship and fun came to a colourful end as Golden Moon were crowned Sonali Othith Master Champions of 2016. The biggest shocks of the Tournament saw Mohammedan, winners of the last three Masters tournaments, and last year’s finalists Shadwell being knocked out in the group stages.
In the semis, Golden Moon beat Sylhet FC 1-0, while London Tigers overcame MK Galacticos by the same scoreline to take their place in the final.
A tense final saw Man of the Tournament Ruhul Islam score a spectacular winner for Towsif Jahan’s men to take the trophy home for Golden Moon. Islam had scored every Golden Moon goal bar one and was also in every single goal his team played on the day. The star man brilliantly tricked the Tigers defence with a deft flick to leave him one on one with the keeper, whom he beat with a crisp side foot finish to send the crowd crazy.
Faruque Mahfuz Ahmed of Sonali Othith said, “We have witnessed some tremendous football moments today. The weather has been brilliant and the atmosphere top class. Great credit goes to all the participants for contributing to such a footballing showcase. Huge thanks go to my colleagues for their immense hard work in making this such a memorable day.”
Impenetrable Golden Moon centre back Samuel Salim was jubilant in victory. He said, “It’s been a tough day on every front and the standard of play and fitness of every opponent we faced has been immense. We feel privileged to have just participated – but to win this prestigious trophy and take it home is a memory I will cherish for a very long time.”
