Jo Wood and Lucy Siegle present the Ethical Wildlife award to winners Friends of Tower Hamlets Park Cemetery at the Observer Ethical Awards 2015, held at the V&A Museum in London

Friends of Cemetery Park are ethics winners

The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park (THCP) were joint winners of an Ethical Wildlife award at the 2015 Observer Ethical Awards last week.

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park in Mile End covers 31 acres of woodland and is cared for by local people, organised as the Friends of the Cemetery Park. The designated Local Nature Reserve hosts various trees, plants, birds, insects, bats, beetles and butterflies – and lots of opportunity for the community to come in and enjoy the wildlife and learn more. The award was accepted by TCHP representatives Tess Pettinger, Terry Lyle and Stephen Kershaw (below).

Joint winner of the award was World Animal Protection UK, which seeks to protect the world’s animals through projects designed specifically to help governments and communities across the world take better care of their animals.

The awards ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of so many people and organisations doing good work in the environmental/ethical world, was attended by celebrities, bloggers and even television soap stars. Other winners on the night included Emma Watson, Swedish denim brand Nudie Jeans and Yoko Ono.

Lucy Siegle, Founder of the Observer Ethical Awards said: “The tenth Observer Ethical Awards shows in no uncertain terms that green has gone mainstream. Our judges including Katie Piper and Deborah Meaden have awarded across the country from the joyous, free, accessible Festival of Thrift in Darlington to Plymouth Community Energy. The ambition and energy of our winners is typified by Coronation Street, the world’s oldest soap opera now on course to become the world’s first carbon literate TV production. On and off screen cast and crew are putting their considerable energies into making Corrie a leader of sustainable TV production.”
