Freedom Cup 2025

By Emdad Rahman

London, Sunday 29th June — Mabley Green will once again host the prestigious Freedom Cup, a vibrant football tournament with deep historical roots and emotional resonance.

Held in 35+ and 50+ age categories, the Freedom Cup is apart from goals and glory — a tribute to the resilience, unity, and sacrifice of those who fought for Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

The tournament was first launched to mark Bangladesh’s Golden Jubilee and has since grown into an annual celebration of freedom, heritage, and community pride. It brings together veteran footballers from across the UK, many of whom are second and third generation British Bangladeshis with direct links to the Liberation War through their families.

As ever, the Freedom Cup promotes intergenerational dialogue and remembrance through the universal language of sport. It honours the struggles of the past while looking ahead to a future rooted in identity, unity, and wellbeing.

The official draw for this year’s tournament was held live on The Sports Show on LB24 TV, hosted by football head coach and presenter Emdad Rahman and involved ILFL official Kobir Choudhury. The event drew considerable attention across community networks and social media, building excitement ahead of the big day.

Syed Salique Ahmed, Chairman of 50 Active, added: “This is about remembrance through action. The players here have lived lives shaped by that freedom. We celebrate not only what was gained, but also what we continue to build as a community.”

Anfor Ali, Secretary of 50 Active, commented: “The Freedom Cup symbolises dignity, history, and health. Football brings people together and through this tournament, we ensure our youth never forget the sacrifices that paved the way for our futures.”

As the stage is set for another historic day of football and reflection, one message rings clear: the Freedom Cup is where legacy meets passion and this is a moving tribute to Bangladesh’s path to independence, remembered and celebrated on the pitch.
