Fatal shooting in Hackney

ANOTHER young man has lost his life after being shot in Hackney’s notoriously gun-prone postcode E5 – and police continue to appeal to the public to come forward with information.

Police received reports at around 11.30pm on 5th June that gunshots had been heard in Brackenfield Close, Hackney, E5. Police and the London Ambulance Service attended and found a man in his twenties, who had been shot. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was later named as Oluwamayowa Adeyemi, 21, who was known as Samson. A post mortem later concluded that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

Homicide offers from the Specialist Crime Command began an immediate investigation and a Section 60 Order was made, allowing police to question anyone in Hackney. The Order  lasted until mid afternoon the following day. A 22 year old man was arrested soon after the incident on suspicion of murder. He was held in custody at an East London police station but was later released on bail, to return on a date in early July.

Some days later, police released a picture of a car (above) which they believe may have been used by those who carried out the murder. It was a large Volvo estate. It had the number plate EX18EXE – which was later found to be a false plate, so the car could have been seen in the area with a different registration number before the murder. The car was found, undamaged, in Cowper Road, N16.

On 12th June, police arrested a second man, aged 20, and the following day they arrested a third man, aged 21. Both men were arrested on suspicion of being involved with the murder. They were taken to an East London police station but later released on bail, to return on a date in early July.

Shortly after the murder, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Considine said, “Following initial enquiries we know that there were people in Brackenfield Close at the time of the shooting. I would urge those people, and anyone else who has information that could progress this investigation, to get in contact immediately. This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of a young man’s life and has left his family and friends devastated. If you can help us find those responsible, then please get in contact.”

Commenting after police had found the abandoned motor vehicle, DCI Considine added, “The car is a large estate vehicle and had some distinguishing features – there were scuff marks to both corners of the front bumper and the front passenger door mirror was held on with tape. I am very keen to hear from anyone who thinks they have seen this Volvo or knows who drives it. My officers and I need to hear from you if you have any information about this car, no matter how insignificant you may think it to be, your information could be key to our investigation.”
