Celebrating the success of sanctuary seekers

WHILE THE Labour Government was making life harder for migrants by taking their mobile phones away, Tower Hamlets Council was recognising the achievements of sanctuary seekers who have been improving their education and making the most of volunteering opportunities.

The Council held an awards ceremony on 17th December to mark the dedication the sanctuary seekers had applied to their personal development. The aim was not only to celebrate the success of the sanctuary seekers but also to show that the Council is a welcoming and inclusive borough which helps sanctuary seekers to thrive.

Cllr Talukdar

Cllr Maium Talukdar, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Lifelong Learning, presented certificates to the sanctuary seekers. He explained how he felt about the sanctuary seekers’ achivements, saying, “Our Sanctuary Seekers Awards are a celebration of resilience and hope. Today we honour individuals who have embraced education and volunteering as pathways to a brighter future. Tower Hamlets remains committed to being a Borough of Sanctuary, where everyone has the chance to thrive.”

Cllr Chowdhury

Cllr Abu Talha Chowdhury, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, also attended the event. He echoed the sentiments expressed by the Deputy Mayor, saying “This event reflects the strength of our community and the values we hold in Tower Hamlets – compassion, inclusion, and opportunity. By recognising these achievements, we send a clear message that Tower Hamlets welcomes those seeking sanctuary.”

This welcoming approach taken by Tower Hamlets Council seems to be miles away from the Reform-lite approach adopted by Keir Starmer’s Government.
