POLICE ARE trying to get to the bottom of an armed altercation which took place in Butchers Road, Canning Town at the end of last year – much of which was caught on CCTV. It all began at around 3.30am on Saturday, 30th De
cember.
The first thing that happens is that one man (holding a shotgun) chases another man along the road and in between parked cars. As they reach Butchers Road, the man who was being chased suddenly produces a handgun from a bag held by a third man – and fires it twice in the general direction of the first man, the one who had been doing the chasing.
No injuries were caused by the shots that were fired. The man who was doing the chasing, with the shotgun, was not seen actually firing the gun. At various stages through the altercation a man wearing a red top seemed to intervene, as if trying to calm the situation down.
Police have now released a grainy still taken from the CCTV, in the hope that someone will recognise one of the suspects.
•Suspect 1 (who fired the handgun) is described as a black male, wearing black joggers, black trainers and a black coat with a light coloured fur hood.
•Suspect 2 (who did the chasing with the shotgun) is described as a black male wearing a knee-length coat with a hood and a baseball cap.
Detective Constable Sameera Bhatti of the Newham Gangs and Firearms Unit said, “We are committed to tackling gun crime and it is paramount that both men are identified so these firearms can be taken off the streets. If you were in the area at the time and have any information that could help identify these suspects then please let us know.”
•Anyone who recognises the suspects or has any other information is asked to call Newham officers on 020-8217 5720. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, where you can give information anonymously.
