Dust hangs over our polluted cities, causing repiratory distress

Brace yourself: hayfever’s here!

THE WEATHER is warmer, but by most counts it’s only the start of spring. Sadley, no one has told urban trees, which are starting to drop their pollen. And that’s very bad news for hayfever sufferers.

A new study shows that London features in UK’s top ten pollen hotspots. Fortunately, the capital is at number seven on the list – but even that position puts it head and shoulders above many parts of the UK.

The study records each city’s counts of the three main types of pollen – grass, tree and weeds. Liverpool is by far the most challenging place to live if you have hayfever. It’s pollen score is a massive 92.66. Second is Birmingham (74.34), and third is Bradford (70.99). London’s score is 63.38.

The table of the UK’s areas least affected by pollen show that Wales is the place to be. Cardiff, Swansea and Newport have combined pollen counts in the high twenties.

Most sufferers can obtain some relief by taking simple precautions such as keeping windows closed at home. Those who suffer more severely should talk to their GP.

The data on the basis of which the table has been calculated has been analysed by AEG, at https://aeg.co.uk
