SEVENTEEN Tower Hamlets residents were arrested as the police held a day of action in the borough at the end of last month. The arrests were all on suspicion of various drug offences, with three men arrests on suspicion of break of the peace too.
The day of action saw the execution of several warrants across Tower Hamlets, with one linked warrant being executed in Grays. During the day, police recovered supplies of Class A drugs and cannabis, as well as around £20,000 in cash.
The day of action took place as part of Operation Continuum, a co-operation between the Council, housing associations and the police set up by Executive Mayor John Biggs. Continuum replaced the “Dealer a Day” commitment set up by Mayor Lutfur Rahman.
Detective Inspector Sean Lyons said, “Even during the Covid public health crisis, criminals seem to think that they can continue to peddle drugs in our communities and get away with it. In order to prove them wrong we have been out again to make arrests and confiscate drugs and any ill-gotten gains. Operation Continuum remains a very successful investigation, and we will keep making arrests as long as people believe they can get away with breaking the law.”
Executive Mayor John Biggs added, “We will continue to work with police to conduct these operations and disrupt local drug markets.” He made no comment on this occasion about what the Council is offering by way of drug rehabilitation services, or services to keep young people away from drugs and get them into secure paid employment.
