Stuff sleep: are you up to beat cancer?

Cancer Research UK holds Shine Night Walk to light up London

Thousands of people are being challenged to stuff sleep,  light up London and help beat cancer sooner by taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Shine Night Walk, in partnership with Scottish Power.

The event, now in its fifth year in London, brings a unique glow to the capital as participants illuminate themselves with lights, flashing headbands and sparkling outfits to form a human road of light as they walk through the dark streets of the capital. The moving parade of light symbolises the hope the charity’s research scientists bring to the dark days of cancer and celebrates the progress that has been made so far.

Shine Night Walk will take place over night from Saturday 26th to Sunday 27th September. “Shiners” will start from Southwark Park, taking in sights such as Tower Bridge, Big Ben, The Shard, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Albert Hall, before finishing in the heart of the city at Old Billingsgate. Participants can walk the full marathon (26.2 miles) or half marathon (13.1 miles) and they can personalise their sponsorship by choosing to fund research into one of 12 different cancer types including prostate, children’s and breast cancer.

Since it began in 2010, Shine Night Walk has raised an incredible £18million to help fund Cancer Research UK’s life saving work. Organisers hope this year 17,000 men, women and children will paint the town neon and help raise almost £5 million to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Sarah Squire, Head of Shine Night Walk, said “We’re asking men and women from across the country to put on their walking shoes and grab their glowsticks this September and take to the streets of London to help us beat cancer sooner. It’s a physical challenge but by teaming up with friends and family and enjoying the incredible atmosphere, participants will be part of a magical night. Everyone who takes part in Shine Night Walk and raises money will make a huge difference to the lives of those affected by this terrible disease and help us reach the day when all cancers are finally cured.”

Money raised through Shine Night Walk goes to fund research in all 200 types of cancer or twelve specific types of cancer including lung, bowel, breast, prostate, children’s cancers, brain, skin, ovarian, leukaemia, pancreatic, cervical, and testicular cancer.
