WE ALL appreciate what our health and care workers are going through – as the weekly “clap for the NHS” at 8pm on Thursdays shows. They are not just doing their jobs but going above and beyond as they care for other people.
Many people are now deeply concerned that health and care workers are pushing themselves to heal and care for others while they themselves are at risk. It is increasingly difficult to believe assurances from Government and employers that supplies of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are adequate. We know the workers are asking for more: how can we help?
That is the question which NHS campaigners will be asking at an online meeting hosted by Waltham Forest Save Our NHS. The aim of the meeting is to show solidarity with those who work in the NHS and in the care sector. Speakers will look at how these people are dealing with the way services suffered under government austerity measures and privatisation by stealth which has been increasing for a decade.
There’s also changing perceptions to consider: not so much among the general public and service users but among politicians and employers. As one NHS worker said recently, “I used to be called unskilled; now I am called essential.”
The meeting will also consider the position of migrant workers in the NHS. Often in the lowest paid jobs, migrant workers are firmly on the front line – as infection (and, sadly, death) rates show. Is this how we express gratitude?
