Tower Hamlets celebrates Refugee Week

WHY DID Tower Hamlets Council stage an interactive art exhibition in the Town Hall to mark Refugee Week? It’s because the event was such a success when it was last held that they did it all over again.

World Refugee Day was on 20th June and UK Refugee Week was from 15th to 21st June, but Tower Hamlets extended the celebrations into the following week. Their exhibition featured artwork provided by artists who come from over 30 different countries. The Council staged the exhibition in partnership with ten organisations based in Tower Hamlets which work with refugees and migrants.

The exhibits included a range of art media: photographs, stories, paintings and more. The Council hopes that those who visit will have space to reflect as they view the artworks – and even to create some art themselves. Migrants are being demonised in the mainstream media and used to push a far-right agenda. Initiatives such as this exhibition, with its poignant but positive images, are needed to push back the hostility.
