TWO OF THE three London Bridge killers have been named. The police believe they were Khuram Shazad Butt (left) and Rachid Redouane (right). Formal identification has not yet taken place.
Butt, 27, was a Pakistani-born British citizen. Redouane, 30, had described himself as of mixed Moroccan and Libyan heritage. He also used the name Rachid Elkhdar and used a different date of birth when using that name. Both lived in Barking, and both were shot by police at the scene of the attack. The identity of the third killer will be announced when the needs of police operations allow.
A great deal of police time is being spent on investigating the background of the killers and how they came to mount this attack – and whether they had accomplices who remain at large. The police arrested twelve people in a raid on a flat in the Elizabeth Fry block, Barking, on Saturday, 4th June. All twelve have now been released without charge. A further five properties have been searched, including one in Newham. Further arrests have been made.
However, time is also being spent on supporting the families of victims. To date, seven people have died as a result of the incident, one is still missing, and 48 people were taken to hospital with injuries. Twelve of the injured have been discharged from hospital, and 18 of the 36 who remain in hospital are still in a critical condition.
The coroner has begun working towards getting formal identifications of the bodies of those murdered in the attack. This has been a difficult job as it is believed that some of the dead are not from the UK, which is making identification more difficult.
Specialist police officers have been working with families who believe a family member may be among those who died in this attack, as well as with the family of someone who is believed to have been on the scene and is still missing.
Police have asked anyone who knew the two killers – particularly their movements in the days running up to the attack – to come forward and help with the investigation.
