Corbyn: act now to reduce the terror threat

JEREMY CORBYN is to set out a Labour foreign policy aimed at reducing the terror threat rather than fanning the flames of conflict.

The Labour Leader will be speaking tomorrow morning (Friday, 26th May – his birthday) to Labour supporters as he indicates the policies a Labour Government would pursue.

We have to wait to see exactly what Corbyn says tomorrow, but it is widely thought that he will point out that the UK’s recent military adventures have not worked, saying, “many experts […] have pointed to the connections between wars our government has supported or fought in other countries and terrorism here at home. That assessment in no way reduces the guilt of those who attack our children. Those terrorists will forever be reviled and held to account for their actions. But an informed understanding of the causes of terrorism is an essential part of an effective response that will protect the security of our people that fights rather than fuels terrorism. We must be brave enough to admit the ‘war on terror’ is simply not working. We need a smarter way to reduce the threat from countries that nurture terrorists and generate terrorism.”

It is thought that in addition to calling for a smarter foreign policy based on diplomacy rather than mass murder, Corbyn will promise to resource the emergency services in the UK – in terms of police and NHS resources.

Explaining his approach, it is thought that he will conclude by saying, “No government can prevent every terrorist attack. If an individual is determined enough and callous enough, sometimes they will get through. But the responsibility of government is to minimise that chance – to ensure the police have the resources they need, that our foreign policy reduces rather than increases the threat to this country, and that at home we never surrender the freedoms we have won and that terrorists are so determined to take away.”

Theresa May is due to be at the G7 summit in Sicily tomorrow, where she will take the chair during a discussion on counter-terrorism. It is understood that she will be trying to persuade the other G7 countries to join in calling on international IT companies to remove pro-terror messages from social media platforms.
