Labour’s John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, has commented on the death of Bow School pupil Nasar Ali. Nasar was taken ill at school on Thursday, 10th November and passed away in the Royal London Hospital on Monday, 14th November.

Controversy surrounds the circumstances of Nasar falling ill: while formal statements from the school have said merely that he “felt unwell”, statements from Nasar’s family have alleged that actions of teachers at the school prompted the teenager to panic and triggered his asthma.

The borough’s mayor, John Biggs, is not making his statement public, but is releasing it upon request. It says:

“My thoughts are with Nasar’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“The circumstances around this tragic death need to be carefully examined but it is Nasar’s family who should be foremost in our thoughts today. We must rally around his family, friends and everyone at his school and offer all the support we can.

“The council will be supporting the police, Bow School and other agencies as the circumstances of his death are investigated, as well as offering all the support we can to the family.”

It is welcome that mayor of Tower Hamlets extends his sympathy to Nasar Ali’s family and understandable that he is not commenting on the circumstances of Nasar’s death, given that there is an investigation underway and the Council will probably have to assist with that investigation.

However, around the Borough there are parents who are worried about what can happen to their children while they are in school – and are looking to the Mayor for reassurance.
